Start with real items: sort laundry by color, toys by type, snacks by shape. Physical sorting is easier and more meaningful than paper sorting.
After your child sorts, ask "Why did you put these together?" Understanding their reasoning matters more than getting the "right" answer.
The same group of objects can be sorted different ways. Show your child that blocks can be sorted by color OR shape OR size.
The "what does not belong" activities build critical thinking. Let your child explain their reasoning even if they choose differently than expected.
