Teaching Tips

Safety first

Use child-safe scissors with rounded tips. Teach the rules: scissors stay at the table, point down when walking, and only cut paper.

Check the grip

Thumb goes in the small hole, two fingers in the big hole. The other hand holds and turns the paper. Proper grip prevents frustration.

Start with snipping

Before cutting along lines, let your child practice simple snips into the edge of paper. Small successes build toward longer cuts.

Turn the paper, not the scissors

Teach your child to rotate the paper with their helper hand while the cutting hand stays steady. This is the key to cutting curves and shapes.
