Phonics is the relationship between letters and the sounds they represent. It includes learning individual letter sounds, identifying beginning and ending sounds in words, and recognizing rhyming patterns. Phonics is the bridge between knowing letters and being able to read words.
When introducing a letter, emphasize its sound over its name. Knowing that B says /b/ is more useful for reading than knowing it’s called "bee."
When teaching beginning sounds, stretch the first sound: "Fffff-ish." This helps children hear the individual sound before the rest of the word.
Pair each letter with a memorable image: A is for apple, B is for ball. Visual anchors help children recall sounds faster.
"I spy something that starts with /b/." This classic game is one of the most effective ways to practice phonics in context.
