Problem-Solving Basics

What Is Problem-Solving Basics?

Problem-solving basics introduces young children to the concept of encountering a challenge and working through it. At this level, problems are simple and concrete: fitting puzzle pieces, building with blocks, or figuring out which shape goes in which hole. The goal is to build a "try it" mindset and basic strategies for working through obstacles.

This Skill Helps Build

  • Growth mindset and persistence
  • Creative thinking and flexibility
  • Independence and self-confidence
  • Foundation for advanced problem-solving

Examples

  • Trying different ways to fit a puzzle piece until it works
  • Figuring out how to stack blocks so they do not fall
  • Choosing which shape fits in a shape sorter hole
  • Finding a way to reach a toy that is too high
  • Working through a simple maze with a finger or crayon

Teaching Tips

Let them struggle productively

When your child is stuck, wait before helping. Say "What could you try?" Give them time to think. Productive struggle builds resilience.

Use encouraging language

Say "You are working so hard on that!" instead of solving it for them. Praise effort and persistence, not just getting it right.

Offer choices, not answers

Instead of showing the solution, offer two options: "Would you like to try turning it or flipping it?" Choices guide without removing the challenge.

Start with easy wins

Begin with simple problems that children can solve successfully. Confidence from easy wins motivates them to tackle harder challenges.
