Subtraction within 10 is the ability to take away from a group and find how many are left, where all numbers are 10 or less. For example, 7 – 3 = 4. It is the inverse of addition and a critical skill for number fluency. Understanding subtraction also includes working with larger numbers using strategies like "subtract through 10."
Use physical objects and real scenarios: "You have 5 grapes. You eat 2. How many are left?" Stories make subtraction concrete.
Show that subtraction and addition are related: if 3 + 4 = 7, then 7 – 4 = 3. Fact families help children see this relationship.
For small subtrahends (1, 2, 3), teach counting back: "Start at 8. Count back 2: 7, 6. The answer is 6."
Children should subtract with real objects before solving written problems. Cover, remove, or cross out items to show "taking away."
