Addition within 10 is the ability to combine two groups of objects and find the total, where the sum is 10 or less. For example, 3 + 4 = 7. This foundational operation is the gateway to all higher math, including addition within 20 using strategies like "making 10" and doubles facts.
Use physical objects (blocks, buttons, cheerios) before worksheets. Children need to see and touch addition before it becomes abstract.
Instead of counting both groups from 1, teach children to start with the larger number and count on. For 5 + 3: start at 5, count 6, 7, 8.
Number bonds show how numbers break apart and come together. Practice all the ways to make 5, then 6, then 7, and so on.
"You have 2 apples. I give you 3 more. How many now?" Story problems make addition meaningful and relevant.
