Counting to 20

What Is Counting to 20?

Counting to 20 extends counting skills through the teen numbers (11–19) and to 20. Teen numbers are particularly challenging in English because their names are irregular (eleven, twelve, thirteen) unlike the predictable pattern of later decades. Mastering counting to 20 is a key kindergarten readiness milestone.

This Skill Helps Build

  • Understanding of teen number structure
  • Foundation for counting to 100
  • Number sense beyond single digits
  • Readiness for addition and subtraction within 20

Examples

  • Counting 15 objects accurately without skipping or repeating
  • Writing numbers 11 through 20 in order
  • Identifying the number that comes after 13
  • Counting to 20 from any starting number (not just 1)
  • Using a number line to count from 10 to 20

Teaching Tips

Master teens individually

Numbers 11–19 are irregular in English. Practice each teen number separately with its quantity before expecting fluent counting through them.

Use a twenty frame

A 2x10 grid (twenty frame) helps children see teen numbers as "10 and some more." 14 is a full row of 10 plus 4 more.

Count past and back

Practice counting forward to 20 and backward from 20. Both directions build number sense and prepare for subtraction.

Connect to daily life

Count 15 cheerios, 18 steps to the car, 20 jumps. Real counting contexts make abstract numbers meaningful.
