Counting to 10

What Is Counting to 10?

Counting to 10 is the foundational math skill where children learn to recite numbers 1 through 10 in order, recognize written numerals 1–10, and count up to 10 objects using one-to-one correspondence (touching each object once while saying one number). This is the entry point to all number sense development.

This Skill Helps Build

  • One-to-one correspondence and number sense
  • Number recognition for numerals 1–10
  • Foundation for counting to 20 and beyond
  • Readiness for early addition concepts

Examples

  • Counting 5 blocks by touching each one: "one, two, three, four, five"
  • Pointing to the number 3 and saying "three"
  • Counting fingers on one hand to 5
  • Placing 7 stickers on a page and counting them
  • Singing a counting song from 1 to 10

Teaching Tips

Count real objects

Always count physical objects first. Touch each one while saying the number. This builds one-to-one correspondence, the most important early counting skill.

Start small

Begin with counting to 3, then 5, then 7, then 10. Build up gradually as your child masters each range.

Count throughout the day

Count steps, snacks, toys, buttons. The more contexts children count in, the stronger the skill becomes.

Use counting songs

Songs like "Five Little Monkeys" and "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe" make counting fun and memorable through rhythm and repetition.
