Measurement Activities for Kids: 9 Ways to Teach Length, Weight, and Capacity

Measurement is one of the most naturally engaging math topics for young children — because it answers questions children already wonder about. “Who’s taller?” “Which backpack is heavier?” “Will this fill up the cup?” Channeling that curiosity into structured measurement exploration builds both math skills and scientific thinking.

Three Types of Early Measurement

  • Length/height: Which is longer? How many cubes long is the table?
  • Weight: Which is heavier? Which side of the balance goes down?
