Geometry Activities for Preschoolers: 9 Ways to Teach Shapes and Space

For young children, geometry is everywhere: the round wheels of a toy car, the rectangular door, the triangular slice of pizza. Geometry activities for preschoolers aren’t abstract — they’re about naming the shapes in the world and understanding what makes each shape what it is.

The 2D Shapes Kindergarten Expects

By the end of kindergarten, children should recognize and name these shapes in any orientation and any size (a triangle tilted sideways is still a triangle):

  • Circle, square, rectangle, triangle
  • Hexagon (6 sides)
  • Rhombus (a tilted square)

The bold distinction: a square is a special rectangle. Teach this explicitly.

9 Geometry Activities

1. Shape attribute sorting. Print or draw 12 shapes of different types, sizes, and orientations. Sort by number of sides (3, 4, or curved). Then re-sort by equal vs. unequal sides. Attribute awareness builds real geometry.

2. Shape hunts. Find 5 circles, 5 rectangles, and 5 triangles in your home. Photograph them. Which shape is most common in your house? (Rectangles, almost certainly.)

3. Geoboard patterns. Use a rubber band geoboard (or dot paper) to make specified shapes. “Make a triangle with 3 dots. Now make a triangle with 6 dots.” Same shape, different size.

4. Tangram puzzles. Tangrams (7-piece sets) develop the ability to compose and decompose shapes — a key geometric skill. Start with simple tangram puzzles before freeform creating.

5. 3D shape exploration. Collect household objects: can (cylinder), box (rectangular prism), ball (sphere), ice cream cone (cone). Name each. Count faces, edges, and vertices with older children.

6. Build a shape city. Use blocks to build a city. Label the buildings with their 3D shape names. Ask: “What shape is the tower? What shape is the roof?” Connects geometry to block play meaningfully.

7. Positional language activities. Play “put the block:” above the box, below the box, inside the box, beside the box, behind the box. Positional language (above, below, beside, between, inside, outside) is a geometry standard often overlooked.

8. Shape art. Cut shapes from construction paper. Create pictures by combining shapes: 2 triangles make a square, 2 squares make a rectangle. This is composition and decomposition of shapes — a key standard in early geometry.

9. “Which shape doesn’t belong?” Put four shapes together where one is different from the others by some rule. Ask: which doesn’t belong, and why? There’s rarely one right answer — this activity develops mathematical argumentation.

Spatial Reasoning Through Block Play

Free-choice block play is one of the strongest builders of spatial reasoning. When a child figures out that two triangle blocks make a square, or that a long block can bridge two short ones, they’re doing geometry. Provide varied blocks (unit blocks, Duplo, magnetic tiles) and time to build without a specific goal. Structured geometry activities and free block play together are more powerful than either alone.
