Addition Activities for Kindergarten: 10 Ways to Teach Adding
Addition in kindergarten is less about memorizing facts and more about understanding what adding means: putting groups together to find how many altogether. The activities that build this understanding are hands-on, concrete, and rooted in real counting — not worksheets.
Before Adding: Does Your Child Count to 10?
Before formal addition, check that your child can: (1) count objects accurately to 10, (2) say the number that comes after any number 1–9 without counting from 1, and (3) understand that counting the last object tells you how many in the group. These are the prerequisites for addition strategies.
10 Addition Activities for Kindergarten
1. Dot card addition. Show two dot cards. Child counts the dots on each, then counts all together. Ask: “3 dots and 2 dots. How many altogether?” Start here before any symbols.
2. Linking cube trains. Build a 4-cube train (one color) and a 3-cube train (another color). Join them. Count the whole train: “4 and 3 make 7.” Write “4 + 3 = 7” after counting, not before.

Automaticity with some facts (doubles, +1, +0) may emerge naturally with enough practice.
