ABAB Patterns

What Is ABAB Patterns?

ABAB patterns are the simplest repeating patterns where two elements alternate: red-blue-red-blue, circle-square-circle-square, or clap-stomp-clap-stomp. Recognizing and extending ABAB patterns is the entry point to algebraic thinking and helps children predict what comes next in a sequence.

This Skill Helps Build

  • Algebraic thinking foundations
  • Prediction and logical reasoning
  • Pattern awareness in numbers and music
  • Foundation for complex pattern types (ABB, ABC, AABB)

Examples

  • Continuing a color pattern: red, blue, red, blue, ___
  • Creating an ABAB pattern with two types of blocks
  • Clapping a movement pattern: clap-stomp-clap-stomp
  • Stringing beads in an alternating color pattern
  • Identifying what comes next in a simple pattern

Teaching Tips

Start with two colors

The simplest ABAB pattern uses two colors. Alternate red and blue blocks, then ask "What comes next?" Keep it concrete and visual.

Use the child’s body

Movement patterns (clap-stomp, jump-sit) help children feel the rhythm of patterns before they see them on paper.

Name the pattern

Use the letters A and B: "Red is A, blue is B. So the pattern is A-B-A-B." This abstract labeling transfers to any materials.

Have children create patterns

After extending your patterns, let children create their own. Creation shows deeper understanding than recognition alone.
